Sigied Himawan Yudhanto, Faizal Risdianto
Abstract

In this study, the researchers focus on the meaning of the DECADE album cover from They Fell From The Sky music band. This was chosen because the artwork used is quite attractive and has This study uses qualitative research with a descriptive method. The analysis was carried out using the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes and the pragmatics theory of John Searle. This study aimed to determine the meaning contained in the cover design of the DECADE album. This research shows that between context signs and visible signs, there is a relationship where the two synergize in the title. The band, namely "They Fell From The Sky," by using a skull image that uses an astronaut costume in an iconic, denotative, and connotative symbolizing "death," a form of death because "falling from the sky" so the message to be conveyed is to publish the Decade album which for ten years or "a decade" like struggling until astronauts in outer space experience death as if falling from the sky. The Astronaut's skull artwork entitled in Indonesian "Binasa" ("Perish" in English) which is the basis of the DECADE album cover design, also strengthens this interpretation.

Acting the Intangible: Hints of Politeness in Non-Verbal Form

Acting the Intangible: Hints of Politeness in Non-Verbal Form
Jumanto Jumanto, Sarif Rizal, Raden Nugroho

Abstract

This review paper has explored politeness in non-verbal form to come to hints for indicating the ideology. Politeness in non-verbal form is researched by reviewing verbal politeness theories through interpretive techniques, and then the data in form of interpreted hints based on the reviews are analyzed by employing a coding technique. The six non-verbal hints of politeness found out based on the theoretical reviews are silence for politeness, gestures for politeness, gifts for politeness, observance of norms, rules, and regulations for politeness, adjusted behavior for politeness, and performance for politeness. The hints expectedly provide a sufficient account for non-verbal politeness in interactions or communication between a speaker and a hearer. The findings also encourage promoting harmony among speakers of languages in non-verbal interactions or communication, especially in formal situations or in the general public. The hints are hopefully also worth considering in the context of English language teaching and learning across languages and cultures in the world.

Politeness and Camaraderie in Indonesian ContextLab:

Abstract
This brief account is a synthesis on how politeness and camaraderie within my pragmatics social verbal project is verified by recent theories on politeness, impoliteness, and interaction strategies. The account starts with the core issue on politeness and camaraderie, and then it continues with face, face-work, face-threat within politeness and impoliteness researches, face-threat within interaction, and it finally concludes with politeness and camaraderie: finding a seat within pragmatics academia. The account ends with my bothering thought concerning Brown & Gilman’s theory of power and solidarity (1968) as a pragmatic unit of context. This thought is something, as pragmaticians may have missed this pragmatic unit of context, they may have ignored this with some reason(s), or they may have regarded this as a pragmatic trivia.
